Occlusal radiography is a special type of intraoral radiography made with the film held between the occluded teeth. Occlusal film is the largest size intraoral film available, perfect for examinating the arch of the maxilla and the mandible. The patient bites down on the film with the X-ray positioned either over the nose (for maxillary) or under the chin (for mandibular). This type of exam is often used to diagnose soft tissue of the cheek and lips, cartilage of the nose and the nasal septum
